Gifts Men Should Not Give Women

1. Let's start with flowers: While research may tell you that flowers make one happy, the fact of the matter is that they wilt and die a slow death. Do you know how painful it is to throw away flowers that you've attached so many sentiments with? And when you can't throw them away because they were oh-so-special you Google how to preserve flowers and even then you don't get it right. The result? A lot of heartache and angst. So, men, think long term. You'll end up causing the woman grief, not happiness. If she's the caring, nurturing types, though, by all means gift her a blooming plant — something she will look at and smile for a long time. For a cactus-killer like yours truly, though, even flowers rooted in soil are a bad idea.

2. Perfumes: Please let a woman select her own brand of scent. Don't make assumptions about all women liking citrus smells or "the delicate scent of a warm rose." Also keep in mind that some of us women might be allergic to the chemicals in perfumes causing us to go into sneezing bouts. And, one more tip: some women might actually deem a gift-wrapped perfume bottle offensive. If you're scratching your head at that last statement, think about how you'd react if someone told you in a passive-aggressive way that you don't smell good.

3. Jewelry: I know most women swoon over big diamonds or rubies and can't stop gloating over their bling, but I urge men to be the "sensible" ones here and take their lady loves on a memorable trip instead. Spend $5,000 on an exclusive island getaway for a week instead of on a stone. Cook for her. Surprise her with a picnic on a regular weekend. Don't take the easy route and buy her a shiny stud — put some more thought into creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's not the bracelets and the pendants she'll remember when she thinks of your love ... it's the time you spent with her that she will cherish.

4. Chocolates: Most women have a weakness for chocolate, but they also know the pitfalls that come with it. You might have garnered by now (through the media and other personal experiences) that women are conscious about their weight. Don't tempt them with calorie-laden sweetness that will end up being the cause of a lot of arguments later in the relationship.

5. Clothes: Women have very distinct preferences of color, fabric, style and what not when it comes to clothes. Don't even try to dress them up or down. There's no way you're getting out of that attempt victorious. You might think you're buying her something flattering, but she might interpret it very differently. Let me put it this way: what a woman likes on the walls of a house are not the kinds of prints or colors she likes in her clothes. She may come and ask your opinion after she's bought a new dress or a pair of shorts, but that's only to validate her own decision. Stay out of her closet and you'll be a happy man.

I am not like most women, so I can see a lot of hue and cry being made about the above list. But even though my gift-receiving tastes might be different from the majority of women, I think all of us have one thing in common: we treasure experiences so much more than any objects you men gift us.

I saw the movie based on the first book of the Stieg Larsson trilogy. Here's what I think. It's ok. Just like the books are ok. A slick piece of pop culture that sets out to entertain and not much else. The movie is pretty cool and the performance . But this is the kind of movie that I imagine will not stand the test of time. Books that nobody reads anymore. A product of marketing and a moment in time.

Knack girls..

Hello friends! I hope you all had an awesome weekend! I had a super great one that included a little shopping spree with a beautiful college friend that I have not seen in a while....an estate sale where I purchased 6....yes 6 fantastic pieces that are totally knackable....{more on that later}... and rain!

As if that wasn't great enough, I have some very exciting news to share with you, and two beautiful ladies for you to meet! As my little Knack grows, new needs and opportunities arise, and I have been looking for team members to come on board and fill those needs.
So, I'm very excited to introduce you to Krystle who will be coming on to help me with events, sales, and marketing. This girl has some serious energy, great personality, and a lingo like my own... which immediately drew me in! We met just a few weeks ago, but have found that we have so much in common....even down to the fact that we have the exact same eyes.....which is a weird detail....I know....but I have never met anyone that had my same crazy eye colors..

I've been fascinated by how much pain women will willingly suffer in the name of fashion.

It's obvious that they don't like doing it — talk to any woman who wears heels daily and she'll tell you how relieved she feels to walk barefoot, soak her tired soles in a hotwater tub after a long day, and slip into cushy, satin-lined slippers at home.She knows the long-term ramifications of wearing heels, too, yet she powers on.

I'm not one to follow trends, but I'm a big fan of common sense.

A male friend had once reacted to my disgust at a woman hobbling across the street, in obvious pain thanks to her stilettos, "What's wrong with you? Don't you realize that women look more appealing in heels? Their whole swagger changes. Men find it really appealing."

So, on behalf of the entire male community he had pronounced that women prized men's attention over their own comfort.

He might have been right, but I had responded with a big, "Whatever!" since I'd rather have a man fall for my wit than for the way my hips move on a stilted piece of footwear.

A study by the Telegraph released on Tuesday, however, suggests that "men cannot even tell if a woman is wearing high heels when they walk."

Women’s Economic Contribution through their Unpaid Work

This report presents a rationale for and research results from a study on the Economic Contribution of Women through their Unpaid Work. The study is part of a larger project by HealthBridge to study this issue, with similar research having been conducted by local organizations in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nepal and Pakistan.

The aim of the study was to establish a reasonable estimate for the extent of women’s contribution to the country’s economy and social development through their unpaid work. For the purpose of the study, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews with women in both urban and rural areas to understand their attitudes and views regarding the value of household work that they and others undertake. At the same time, the researchers collected quantitative data from both men and women in urban and rural areas to assess the time that they spent on paid work and unpaid household activities

I constantly feel like I’m staring at an unrecognizable and clawed-at photo. It looks familiar. Like a friend or a place that I know well yet can’t firmly identify. Women’s sophomore album expands upon their Velvet Underground-inspired pop by deconstructing it one brittle pluck at a time. Opener “Can’t You See” drones with controlled feedback, strings and vocals that are so distant and uncaring. There’s a triumphant joy within the lack of clarity, but there’s also no sign that Women want to be held close or understood either, and that makes complete sense with what comes next. “Heat Distraction” is full of wrecked guitar picking that sounds lost yet strategically placed in every repetition within its oddly shaped time signature. It’s the sound of a group reshaping post-punk into their own mangled vision of experimental pop. “Narrow with the Hall” takes a more direct approach. It follows a linear and distorted guitar note then erupts with a wash of noise that rivals a thousand fuzzy televisions losing their signals. If you feel disoriented then the album is doing its job.

Women Make Their Mark on South American Politics

Their triumphs were the result of a process of political participation by women that is much broader than the simple enforcement of quota laws, introduced in several Latin American countries over the last 20 years to enable women’s access to publicly elected posts.

Argentina was a global pioneer in adopting a quota law, and ranks second after Costa Rica among Latin American countries for having the highest percentage of women in parliament: 38.5 percent in the lower chamber and 35 percent in the senate.

But affirmative action does not explain the ascent of Bachelet in Chile, where there is no quota law and the present percentage of women in parliament is low: 14 percent in the lower chamber and 13 percent in the senate.

And quotas have failed dismally in Brazil, where women have 8.8 percent of the seats in the lower chamber and 12.3 percent in the senate, and the situation is even worse at the level of state governors and mayors.

Stem cell treatment could help barren women conceive

Thousands of women experiencing early menopause may be able to conceive a child, thanks to pioneering stem cell treatment.

One out of a 100 women goes through the menopause before they are 40 years, preventing conception.

Scientists have come up with a way of restoring the ovaries ability to produce eggs using cells specially developed in the lab.

There is no current treatment for the condition, known as Premature Ovarian Failure, which affects one percent of all women, reports the Daily Mail.

It causes their ovaries to stop producing eggs 10 or even 30 years earlier than normal leaving them infertile, when many were hoping to have babies.

But scientists in Cairo, Egypt, have come up with a method which they say could be developed to help restore the ovaries to their normal working order.

In a study involving rats, the researchers created a special type of stem cell known as a mesenchymal stem cell from rat embryos.

They then implanted these cells into female rats who had been a chemical to induce ovarian failure.

They found that within two weeks the female rates ovaries were working normally, and within two months their hormone levels were the same as animals who did have the illness.

New Agency For Women Welfare, UN Announces

The United Nations on Tuesday announced a new agency UN Women, set up exclusively for women welfare across the world.

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of UN, announced that former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet would head the UN Women. The agency would function for the women welfare and promote equality for women.

"Ms. Bachelet brings to this critical position a history of dynamic global leadership, highly honed political skills and uncommon ability to create consensus and focus among UN agencies and many partners in both the public and private sector," Ban said.

The UN Women would start operating from January 2011. According to sources, the new agency would merge all the other agencies functioning for women’s welfare including the UN Development Fund for Women, the Division for the Advancement of Women, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women.
